The Story of LightCon

ABOUT

LightCon is a fully online convention that takes place in mid-July. Formed during the dark times of the COVID-19 lock-down, we provide a place for fellow nerds to gather without having to leave the comfort of their home!

HISTORY

The concept for LightCon was originally conceived at the University of Minnesota's anime club, the Manga Anime Society. The members saw the disappointment that was sweeping through the community as more and more conventions cancelled due to the spreading Corona-virus. Some of us were slated to present panels or organize other activities at these conventions, and we realized there was a chance that we could rewrite our panels to work in a remote presentation environment. One by one, small gatherings began to pop up where individuals would host panels online, and gain a small following.

We realized that if this worked for individuals, there was a chance we could reach out and organize a gathering with many people. And that's exactly what we did! In that moment, LightCon was born and spun off as a separate organization from MAS, though we would continue to leverage MAS's support where they were willing and able to provide it.
